Marine electrician · Winnellie workshop & Darwin Harbour

Marine Electrician & Boat Electrics Darwin

Wiring, batteries, solar, chartplotters, sounders and radios for tinnies, cruisers, working boats and commercial vessels. Installed and fault-found by someone who spent four years doing it for Wheelhouse Marine.

Salt air, heat and the wet season work everything harder up here. We install for that: proper terminations, corrosion protection and cable that’s sized for the run, not the cheapest reel.

What we fix

Everything electrical on the boat.

Boat wiring and rewires

From a new switch panel to a complete rewire: distribution, breakers, bonding, tinned cable, proper crimps and labelling. Survey-ready where you need the paperwork.

Batteries and charging

AGM and lithium banks, dual-battery setups, isolators, alternator charging, DC-DC chargers and voltage-drop testing so the fridge still runs on day three.

Solar, inverters and shore power

Solar arrays and controllers, inverter and inverter-chargers, shore-power connection with galvanic isolators, and load management for long trips.

Chartplotters and sounders

Garmin, Lowrance, Simrad, Furuno and Humminbird installed, integrated and calibrated. Transducer selection and mounting for Darwin water, radar tied into the plotter.

Radios and AIS

VHF, HF and AIS installed with antennas placed and grounded properly, so they work when it matters.

Autopilot and NMEA networks

Autopilot install and tuning, NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk backbones designed and fault-found, so every instrument talks to every other.

Fault-finding

Intermittent faults, dead circuits, charging problems, instruments that drop off the network. Structured testing and a clear explanation before we proceed.

Lighting and extras

LED cabin and deck lighting, underwater lights, watermakers, pumps, and the accessory circuits that always get added later.

Electronics repaired, not just replaced

Plotters, radios, chargers and switch panels repaired at the board level in our electronics workshop when a new one isn’t justified.

Refits and commissioning

Full and partial refits planned around haul-out windows, sea trials, and documentation handed over so the next person can find their way around.

How it works

Look, quote, install, sea trial.

Questions

Common questions

Can you wire my boat from scratch?

Yes. New builds, restorations and full rewires of old boats with a bird’s nest behind the dash are regular work. You get a diagram at the end.

Do you come to the marina?

Yes. Cullen Bay, Frances Bay, Stokes Hill, the ramps and private moorings around Darwin Harbour, plus yards and driveways. On-vessel visits are quoted per job.

Which brands do you install?

Garmin, Lowrance, Simrad, Furuno and Humminbird for electronics; Victron, Redarc and similar for power. We’ll install what you’ve bought, or advise what suits the boat.

Why does everything corrode so fast up here?

Salt, humidity and heat. Untinned cable, bare crimps and indoor-grade gear don’t last a season. We use tinned cable, sealed terminations and corrosion protection as standard.

Can you put solar panels on my boat?

Yes. Panels, a controller matched to the battery bank, and cabling that survives salt and sun. Sized for what you run on board, from a fridge on a tinny to a cruiser on the mooring for a month.

Can you fix my chartplotter instead of replacing it?

Often. Plotters, radios and chargers are repaired at the board level in our workshop when the fault is a component, not a cracked screen.

Do you work on commercial and government vessels?

Yes. Working boats, charter vessels and larger ships across northern Australia. See ship repair.

Where we work

Darwin Harbour, the Top End coast and beyond.

Workshop in Winnellie, a short run from East Arm, Cullen Bay, Frances Bay and Stokes Hill. On-vessel work around Darwin, and scheduled trips along the NT coast for larger jobs.
